Harlem Renaissance Literature and Culture, Part 1 “The Harlem Renaissance” names the explosion of cultural and literary African American artistic expression during the 1920s and 30s in New York. This course will introduce you to themes and structures of expression during this major period in American thought. The Harlem writers we will be studying include W.E.B. Du Bois, James Weldon Johnson, Langston Hughes, Claude McKay, Nella Larsen, Bruce Nugent, and others. . We will also be studying Renaissance performance, graphic arts and music, so closely tied to the literary expression of the era. Taken together, this work defined the character of a community, individuals, and the direction of artistic expression and meaning in the US.
