What is education? Is its purpose to prepare us for the job market, or to make us more complete human beings? Does it socialize us into a static normalcy, or open us to creativity, dissent, and self-knowledge? Authors, educators, philosophers, and filmmakers have grappled with these questions for centuries, and in this class we will examine novels, memoirs, essays, and films that offer distinct philosophies of education for US readers and students. We will also engage in some unusual forms of self-education, including field-work and the making of oral histories.
